Game 13

SGC is now officially at the halfway mark of the summer golf season. A good number of players showed up and played Kingsforest golf course last Sunday. As a matter of fact twenty-five members were able to tee it up. Some members were committed to other two golf events that were simultaneously happening and surely with the intention of supporting worthy charitable causes. The sky opened up and then came the rain downpour for brief minutes at the early round. After that the sun came out and turned to sticky hot afternoon altogether. The golf course was still not really in tip top shape most especially the fairways which are missing a lot of patches of no grass since we played here a month ago. You were just out of luck if your ball happened to stay in one of those.

Anyway, regardless of the not so ideal venue situation, the best story line here was a performance of one new member who fired a gross score of three over par 75. This piece by far was an exultation of Brian Kim’s credential as a superb golf player.

Nassau: First time winners catapulted in winning the corners unexpectedly. Ricky R. skillfully took the front nine while Bert C. grabbed the back and overall.

Closest to the pin: If you think a senior member could not hit it close to a 192 yards par 3 hole, you were wrong. Fred DLR fired with gusto to win the 5th hole. As far as the back nine 17th hole was concerned, nobody could get on the green until the 4th flight of players took their turns. Julio R. was in this group and had no problems hitting it close that no one from the groups that followed could beat.

Race to Month 3: With only two rounds to go, Dave N. took the liberty of pushing himself ahead by shooting a net of 70 giving him a lead of a mere stroke from Seho O. and Bert C. Two others players four strokes behind are Joey C. and JC M.

Dave N.

Race to POY: Same faces sit atop the power lead halfway down – Jimmy M. Jojo D., Seho O. & Joey C. Anybody’s game to win it all.

Race to Senior POY: It looks like this is a race for two people right out for Joey C. & Seho O. Both possess a huge margin from those running from third place and down. Unless someone shoots the light out of the remaining games, this could be the game for either of the players mentioned above.

Congratulations to the winners.

Game 12

SGC tourney travelled east last Sunday to play the very same venue where Super Series 3 is to be held in three weeks at Maples of Ballantrae golf course. Thirty players showed up including two guests. Players with intentions of grabbing SS3 prize got a good look at this course hoping for an effective plan to masterfully contend and win a prize for the coming event. For those who just wanted to get solace from a hard everyday grind at work or at home, this was the ideal occasion to relax and unwind. No complaints about the perfect golf weather, no excuses not to enjoy the weekend outing. It is one of the reasons that golf has come to mean so much to myself and many others.

So we had the round of golf and winners we should have. Three members got their mojo going by outduelling the field with a net of 66 – the ever relentless new member Don C., our promising & young buck Sam K., and the sweet & smooth swinging Dave N. All looked good to earn themselves huge 41.667 points each.

Closest to the pin: Bert C. won the tenth and the newly dubbed “Mr. Closest to the Pin” guy Bingoy P. hit a clutch shot on the harder of the two holes fourteenth hole.

Race to Month 3 is posted and if you’re interested, MIP results is also available. This maybe the info you need if you think your game is sliding down a bit or not. No, I did not mean the big “S” word.

Senior POY: These two seniors are playing the musical chairs game. Just a week ago it was Seho O. who had the lead by one stroke over Joey C. But Joey’s net of 67 against 68 of Seho got Joey the lead back. Interesting and a good race although we have a long, long way to go.

POY: It looks like Jimmy M. got a foothold of this contest. He leads for a number of weeks now with Jojo D. running close. Also in contention are the seniors mentioned above – Seho & Joey. With a solo win next week by anyone of the contenders it could change the scenario. Good luck to everyone.

We thank Pat D. for the nourishing fries after the game and also a round of drinks provided by Nassau winner Don C.

Congrats to all winners!

Game 11

After a short rain drizzle midway in a round and at 27 degrees C, it really got muggy last Sunday at Century Pines golf course. Most of the twenty-eight players who showed up and played scorched the golf course, scoring wise. This golf course with a very reasonable green fee unpredictably had given members a good ribbing from past events SGC played here. Noticeably players took advantage this time around got their wishes by scoring low from what seemed an easy setup from this golf course. Well let’s see who got themselves positioned for a start of a new race for month three. Time flies when you’re having fun as we are nearing halfway mark into the season.

Exe N. still gregariously hot from previous outing a week ago, closed-out with a net of 64. Seho O. who claimed after the round that this was the first time he beat someone named Jojo D., echoed the same net score of 64. This proved to be the lowest mark for that day. Impressive showing by both seniors.

Nassau: Seho with that incredible net of 64, snatched the back and overall. Another senior, Mar DV, inspired by a new club – a driver – took the front nine convincingly.

Closest to the pin: Seho again showing hard work of practice rifled an accurate shot on the fifth hole to take the honour, while another senior, Don C. beat Seho’s on the fifteenth by a hair of a margin.

This must be senior’s day. Way to go fellas!!

Race to Senior POY is shaping up as ten games are all in. Seho leads the way by two points over Joey C. Far third is a tie for Bingoy P. & Rene Q.

SGC welcomes back Levi M. for his first official game of the season.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 10

Official start of summer was last week and guess what, summer’s already in full swing. Players more times than not are now to endure long hot lazy days. As of last Sunday at Royal Woodbine golf course, only three players were not able to show up. As a matter of fact most of the thirty-five players that did, most of them were aspiring to be the preferred one to grab the Super Series top prize. However the likelihood of winning this one for some members was just virginally a dream – dream big if you could. Nothing wrong with it. They say ball is round and you’ll never know what happens.

Just three days prior to last Sunday, I met with one of our SGC seniors in one of our religious sect gatherings they called “off-track” institution. He said and I quote, “I’m not playing that good lately but this Sunday, I feel like confident enough to enter that Super Series contest and win it”. True to his words, Exe N. entered the contest and won it together with Jimmy M.

A lot of good things happened that Sunday. Particularly interesting was that Exe and Jimmy both turned in a net of 67 tying another senior, Rey Mac garnering the best net score of the day.

Nassau: Two other seniors showing gritty mettle – one Rey P. who I heard was mysteriously practicing hard in a mystifying place, grabbed the front nine while the other senior, Sennix B. took the back. With Rey Mac’s net of remarkable 67, he took overall tying that guy Jimmy M. who seemed to be placing himself in the winning podium all the time.

Bingoy P.

Closest to the pin: Members were heard saying that they had never seen this one happening in so many years. One senior member, Bingoy P. shooting the closest to pins 4th & 10th that nobody was able to beat.

Jojo D.

Month 2: It was game five of the month so somebody would win the monthly honours. Jojo D. outmaneuvered Jimmy M., yes it was him again and Sam K. to reap first place. Only a mere stroke separating the three gentlemen.

Special mention to Jun P. who shot an eagle on the par 5 ninth.

Congratulations to the winners.

Game 9

SGC would like to compliment the other three members who rallied to launch our convincing second place team finish in last Saturday’s GTAA interleague – Ross Bautista, JC Montilla and Rene Querubin. These trio turned in net score of 74 to supplement the lowest ten scores submitted by SGC. Wonderful effort.

GAME 9 – Excitement and expectations at the GTAA aftermath toiled dearly to most spent members the following day Sunday at Kingsforest Golf Club. For twenty-four players that showed up, some players did not have enough juice to get it going while others did not bother showing up. The likelihood of repeating same performance the day before was highly unlikely, you ponder? Disappointment surprised members who’s got a few words regarding the condition of this golf course – concrete fairways, spotted greens and to top it all the $70 green fee the course charged with power cart. Whatever happened to the senior rate we used to have?

Anyway gripes aside, one player who seemed not irritated by all of these distractions and was one of the players responsible for elevating SGC’s second place finish a day ago at the GTAA – Fred H. – posted another impressive romp net score of 69. How about them apples?

Fred H.

Nassau – Bong M. shooting fair number of GIRs at the front rewarded himself winning it while Julio R. playing with Jimmy M. & Jojo D. did not give them a chance by grabbing the back nine. Another trio tied to seize the coveted lowest overall prize –Sennix B., Oscar J. & Seho O.

Closest to the pin – “How did it happen that no one beat my shot?”, Jojo D. was asking himself because his shot barely made the green on the seventh hole thirty yards away from the pin. Given a chance to do her thing on the 14th hole, Lina M. beat Joey C’s ten-footer from the pin.

GTAA 2014

June 14, 2014

Cheers to all participants in this year’s GTAA Interleague. Much appreciation to SOGA for hosting vigorously this event at Carlisle Golf & Country Club last Saturday. Sierra Golf Club thanks SOGA’s president and its members for making this one another success story. More than one-hundred and forty players played and the attendance was considered one of the biggest or if not the biggest even without Tiger Woods.  Kidding aside, the weather turned out perfect and cooperated the whole day as if it was on cue.

How did SGC fare this time at the height of this competition you asked? Well there were signs of good karma and preparation by the members prior to this event. Although SGC did not win the team overall lowest score, which was won by BIGAT – applause, applause – SGC performed well to garner second place. This was a huge accomplishment by the whole SGC team as SGC jumped from last place from the previous years to well-earned second place.

SGC would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of these triumvirate members –  Manny Chea, Jojo Dizon, and Jimmy Manguerra – who performed with guts and gusto winning best gross and best net walloping the very best of other clubs that they had thrown in into the arena. Should we say they put SGC on the map? Of course they did without a doubt.

The obvious was as far as the team effort was concerned these three players mentioned above could not do it alone without the support of other members. SGC would like to acknowledge the exceptional show of determination in a team effort by the following members: Joey Cruz, Oscar Jacela, Fred Halili, Sam Kim, Pat Deoca, Mike Montilla, and Eddie Ilao. Upon finding out who made the top ten net scores to improve SGC’s position as second placer, SGC salutes our very own Seniors – Fred Halili & Pat Deoca. Good work fellas, you made the rest of us so proud !!!

Game 7 at Carlisle

Last Sunday still had the trappings of another weather show at Carlisle Golf Club. Golf weather was so unpredictable that it started well at tee time but at the time we were concluding our round, the weather did us no favor at all. Most of us were ill-prepared and taken by surprise that all thirty-four players including one guest were all soaking wet because of the rain.

GTAA news: Heading into next weekend, SGC feels that members participating in the GTAA are in the position to be a little excited for reasons that this interleague event is happening on this very same venue. If not for the rain last Sunday, good scores turned in by members from previous engagement on this course predict a very good showing to give the big boys from other clubs a good run for their money. SOGA who happens to host this annual event marvelled that SGC has the most number of participants competing this year together with BIGAT. We are all set to compete. Good luck to all of us!!!

Sunday’s Game: A strong performance off the tee consistently left Saed J. in position to attack the harder two of the three nine-hole Carlisle course turning in a net score of 67 – the best of the bunch. SGC could probably use Saed’s game at this coming GTAA competition this Saturday but the nature of his work conflicts with the sched and that is just too bad. Special mention to Lina M. who signed for a net score of 70 tying three others for third place overall earning well deserved 27.5 points each.

Saed J

Saed J

Nassau: There was little hope of drama for the Sunday finish at the Carlisle golf course as astonishingly Sam K. made a sweep of the corners, well almost. With his net score of 68, it won him the overall and front. Sam also grabbed the back nine tied with Joey C. and Jimmy M. By far Jimmy again took the lowest gross score of 76.

Closest to the pin: Sounded like these two gents were cut out to winning this contest a regular habit. After winning one hole the last time we played here, Jun P. again shot the closest on fourth hole. Julio R. who happened to win one of the holes last week took the seventh.

SGC welcomes a new member Ed Tenorlas who happened to be the president of the now defunct Heritage Golf Club.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Please come early this Saturday for the GTAA event. Registration starts at 12 noon. If Joey C. receives a confirmed line-up list from SOGA in time, we will post it together with other info if there is any. Wear your SGC shirt with beige pants.

Game 6

Thirty-three players showed up and played last Sunday at Royal Woodbine golf course including two guests. No more complains heard from players concerning the weather except for a few bites from unfriendly mosquitoes. Not much wind to contend with and the sun, yes the sun was smiling at us all afternoon long. Noticeable also was the abundance of moths hovering over your head that was quite bothersome when teeing off. Golf course nice layout is much adapted to wild life which is rather surprising because of its proximity to urban environment. It shows the richness of food for wild animals plying the course as we saw two healthy coyotes, a fox and bunnies. Heard that the course management is just renting the property and that our government owns the land. Well so much for that stuff and let’s talk about the game. Perception wise, most players if not all are getting into the summer golf swing of things and getting into fine form as indicated by progressing scores.

Remarkable net 66 of three players showing guts and determination – Jojo D., Bingoy P., & Rene Q. who could have shot easily the lowest gross score but beaten by Jimmy M. with a 74.

Closest to the pin: Jimmy M. shot the closest on 7th hole; Julio R. won the 14th. Both were so close that I could not put my hairpiece in between the ball and the pin. Just kidding.

SGC welcomes back one of our old timers for his first game this season – Nap Pascual.

ANNOUNCEMENT: If you have not read an email from our Prez Joey C., please take note: Royal Woodbine reminded our club they might lose their liquor license because of members bringing their own liquor and drinking on the course. This is our second warning already and SGC does not want to lose our good standing with this golf course or to any golf course for the same matter.

SGC similarly would like to put a cap to maximum number of members to 40 for this year and the years to follow.

Congratulations to all winners. Thanks for the round of drinks.

Game 5

Conditions on last Sunday’s round seemed perfect weather wise. Little brisk wind in open and wide spaces was felt partially through the golf course but the most important aspect of all was the sun shining brightly all afternoon long. Together with the beautiful Royal Ashburn Golf Club it was a picture-perfect setup, wouldn’t you say? This course that used to be called Thunderbird golf course changed its name when one of the British monarchies, Prince Andrew paid a visit. Amenities like the practice areas were part of the clandestine offering by the golf course which surprised first-timers to try this course. What part of the course attracted the players most was the huge chipping & putting area. Not to mention some of the staff who wore kilts were friendly and courteous. So that Sunday was a perfect condition to post good scores, well, let’s see…….

After starting slowly, Joey C. played a four-game stretch in the average gross score of 94, a run that saw his name surged down to the bottom of the well before last Sunday. According to his own bragging admonition he tweaked his grip a bit to adjust to another driver club that he was not used to using. Well whatever anyone says, the result was beyond belief.

Joey C

Joey C

Joey blitzed the front nine by shelling one over and turning in an overall gross score of 80. No one else came close except Jimmy M. who had a gross score of 73. Both men were in the same foursome as they were battling back and forth who would get the first place netter and the huge 50 points to go along with it, I was told.

Jimmy M. - Gross Champ 2013

Jimmy M.

Jimmy lost to the handicapping system and placed second. But wait. There is a story behind to all of these. Eddie I. was trying to convince the members after the game that the result posted by Joey was a by-product of a six-day-a-week playing golf by Joey at Royal Woodbine where he is a member and takes a day off Sunday to play recreational golf with SGC.

Who else got a name worth mentioning?
Nassau: A sweep in any sporting event is such a dirty word. Joey did not win the back after all. He took the front and overall. If you looked up “due for a win” in the dictionary, Bong M’s picture would be right there. Bong took the back with a net of 32. Joey I assumed must be shooting darts on Bong’s picture on the wall.bong

Closest to the pin: Paolo B. remember him, our 2010 POY champ? He grabbed hole 7th while Bingoy who bragged (a few players were getting tired of hearing this) about winning something every week got the nod on the 17th hole.

Super Series Sunday:
As expected the three people got mentioned above took the top three prizes: Joey C. won it followed by Jimmy M. in second place, while Bong M. placing third. Manny M. who is showing signs of worthy play of late brought up the rear.

Manny M.

Manny M.

Month 1: Jimmy M. with a surge of gross 73 overtook Jojo D. who settled for second place. Bert C. dropped to third.

It was worth mentioning that players who elected to opt for the dinner package after the game enjoyed the wholesome dinner. Thanks to Joey who shouldered paying for most of the drinks.

We welcome back Saed Jafari for showing up for the first time and Oscar J. who fired a decent net of 70 engaging third place.

Congratulations to the winners!

ANNOUNCEMENT: We will try to have a picture taking again this Sunday for the last one that we did, did not turn out well. So please bring your SGC shirt over. You do not have to wear it to play your round of golf but just for picture taking purposes only.

Game 4

Amazing scores turned in by a number of players last Sunday at Carlisle Golf and Country Club due to pleasant locales from both the weather and the golf course itself. An indication that this golf course maybe considered as one of the friendliest courses we ever played in our summer tourney. The separation between the blue and white tees were significant on most holes with regards to their designated location. Players who are hitting from the white tees enjoyed the fine setup to counter balance the usual hitting power displayed by blue tee hitters. The resulting scores though on the contrary favoured the players hitting from afar. The two players got the most attention mind you by firing an identical gross of 79 – Julio R.

Julio R.

Jimmy M.

and Jimmy M. While Jimmy made par on all holes at the front, Julio tallied with just two strokes over the front nine. Good to see Julio getting the huge 50 club’s kahuna points for the overall win. It is also pleasing to see that SGC’s A-listers are getting warmed up for the coming GTAA interleague tournament which happens at this very same course coming soon next month.

Here is the pic of the two of our newcomers Don C. & Ricky R. P1090548 We welcome few of our members finally showing up yesterday and from the previous rounds so far – Lina M., Fred H., Exe N. & Jun P.

Nassau contest:

Three people signed in matching front net of 32 – Jojo D., Sam K., & Jimmy M. while Manny M. took solo back nine with net score of 32 as well. All winners hit from blue tees. The only winner hitting from the white tees was Bingoy P. who garnered the overall crown with a net score of 67.

Announcement: If you are confirmed to play next Sunday at Royal Ashburn, please let Jimmy M. know if you are taking the dinner package that the course offered. It is a Super Series week.

Congrats to all winners!
