Game 23

There was a threat of heavy rain throughout the day last Sunday at Westview golf course. Was this the main reason only twenty-two players showed up? Few players stayed away but the rain stopped before 10 a.m. in most part of the GTA. For members who played, they were rewarded with weather phenomena as the sun broke through about an hour into the round, and by late afternoon the Aurora region was gleaming.

Aside from the fact that the greens retained most of their firmness, these very same greens created a lot of frustration to a lot of players who were unable to cope with the putting speed. I remembered a year or two years back, when the mirror-like greens were much worse then. Everybody predicted high scoring affair due to course conditions. Magic number was net 74. Funny though about the three people who tied for the winning score of 74, none entered the Nassau contest. Who made the most of conditions softened by heavy rain earlier in the day? One of them is a senior who just got accolades of scoring lowest net last week. Fred H. who never dared of thinking fading into the sunset yet did it again this time. Manny C. who is quietly asserting himself once again as one of SGC notables, was in there as well. Saed J. making huge noise in our tourney this summer with hard-luck, good baby stride performance was as well making it known to succeed by contending in most categories. All three members proudly smoked the course with a net of 74 better than anyone else.

Nassau: Not knowingly he just made an eagle shot on the ninth hole of Homes course, Rey P. helped himself by winning the front nine together with the handsome prize of that eagle shot. Then there was this name once again in the winning podium – Jojo D. tied up for bagging the back and overall with the smooth accurate swinging Mar DV.

Congrats to the winners.

Game 22

Last Sunday’s golf event was abandoned by bad weather conditions. Ideal weather with a little nippy temperature on the side suggesting a warmer clothing to put on. Cart path only course of action was imposed by Century Pines golf course as management declared rain saturated course prior to Sunday’s game but other than that, it was perfect. Thirty-two players bothered to show up but most of them replied with plenty of fine golf.

The soft course gave way itself to aggressive play. The bigger issue was soft conditions that had allowed for very little roll, making the course a haven for big hitters, and a monster for those who were not. One senior who posted the more impressive romp and did not care at all what golf conditions were presented to him, signed a net of 65. Fred H. was nice enough to share the winning podium with Jojo D. who also finished off his round of net 65. Way to go Freddie! The way it is going, Jojo is making a statement this year. You will hear from him more before this page ends.

Nassau and Nassau 16 & under format: Guess what, because of that scintillating barrage of birdies and pars, Jojo D. took both front and overall score for both contests. Seho O. not to be counted out, also seized the back nine for both regular Nassau and 16 & under. Boy, talk about monopoly.

Seho O.

Closest to the pin: Two SGC sharpshooters got their mojo going. Manny C. who just missed getting himself a hole-in-one took the fifth hole – that was ever close. Brian K. who won two weeks ago, got nobody to contest his shot on the fifteenth hole.

Race to Month 5: Who else would you think would lead this race? The incomparable Fred H. with total of 137 in two games so far sits number one followed by Jojo D. three strokes behind. Four behind in third place is Brian K.

Race to MIP: Battle of the Js. No, not the Blue Jays who lost two in a row in Baltimore. We are talking about Jimmy J. and Jojo D. Jimmy holds on to the mere lead of .30 points even after a wonderful performance by Jojo last Sunday. No one is closer to these two and obviously one or the other will take the crown. Dave N. is the only one who got a say to all of these who is a distant third. Who knows, golf’s got its own way of doing things.

Ricky R.

Ricky R.

Race to Senior POY: Ahhh…this is one race that ever changes like the autumn leaves. Guess who snuck into the top? Yes, none other than Ricky R. While co-leaders Joey C. & Bong M. remained idle, with a net of 71 Ricky catapulted himself atop the leaderboard with total of 691. Second placers Joey & Bong are two behind while Seho O. drops down to fourth place five points behind the leader.

Race to POY: We have a new leader as well this time. Jojo D. yes that name again, took over the lead from Jimmy M. who relegated to second place. With three games to account for, it is safe to say that this race is still anybody else’s ball game. Remember that consoling mammoth 50 points if you win a round?

This is somewhat gloomy story. We heard through the grapevine that these two members – Levi M. & Julio R. are shutting down for the season. Hopefully with three more games left they will change their minds and rejoin us. Look at this, we welcome back Paolo B. who showed up and played two games in a row now after a long absence.

Rumour mill: Whispers and thoughts from a lot of members getting bushed of joining GTAA tournament next year. Why? Specifically, the way other golf associations declared and submitted their member’s handicaps making the playing field harder to compete and enjoy the game of golf. Other than that, it was OK but it was not hard to notice other noticeable players from other clubs equipped with  disputed handicaps or dubious…..or should I say gifted handicaps. Why was this happening every time there was a huge event like this? Sour grapes or not? Do we see a point of SGC continuing to join? Let’s hear from you. Attend the meeting next month and voice your opinion and vote.

Suggestion box: (Are you listening officers?) If you are away or for any other reason you will not be able to attend SGC’s annual meeting and vote, may I suggest to email our Prez of your opinion a week ahead of the meeting which was declared to be held on October 25, 2014 provided the topic is presented at the table and voted on. Hate to say this but NO word of mouth is allowed because it gets distorted along the way. Idea of this concerns is presented early on to give members better chance of getting heard and make our golf summer fun more enjoyable for years to come. Suggestions are warmly welcome. Your vote counts.

Public service: Going to Westview golf course take East Bloomington then left to Woodbine Ave., another left to Vandorf Sideroad. Do not take Leslie St. as the construction there might be still going on.

Well, you are updated. Congratulations to the winners.

Game 21

Cloudy conditions and only a gentle Toronto heavy traffic smog breeze with high 75 degrees opened play at Royal Woodbine last Sunday. Playing a round at this time of year was so dicey because of our start time of almost 2 o’clock in the afternoon. It was a little late start, mind you. Didn’t we ever learn? Finishing the day for the last three groups were disappointing just as conditions began to deteriorate as it was getting pitch dark. Heard grunting from few people of the last groups but startlingly enough all finished their respective rounds despite the darkness. It’s worth noting that condition like this, it is the member‘s prerogative not to finish his/her round because of darkness. This will result according to SGC’s local rules to everybody else’s score for that particular day nullified. Simply put, this is the same as a round being cancelled. Thirty-seven players including one guest showed up and were mostly gratefully contented upon learning that the remaining four games in the schedule did not have late afternoon tee times.

Well let’s begin with the storyline for last Sunday’s round. Winners we did have. We have a member who had been through a lot of personal difficult moments and he always had been able to handle them. We marvelled at how all that old brilliance could give way so quickly to the same doubts that had given us pause since he returned from his personal woes. This time an SGC senior old timer Nap P. signed in for a round net of 68 for the game winner. Given the chance to watch him played was an honour as I happened to be in the very same group. Another never-giving-up senior who likened the direction he’s headed put himself in the position to get the job done – Rey P. took care of business and carded a net of 68 as well tied with Nap for the best net score.

Nassau: Rey P. with his convincing net of 68 took the front and overall. Ricky R. who consistently grabbed a prize or two from previous weeks, got himself another one by winning the back nine.

Congratulations to the winners.

Game 20

Another ideal weather conditions last Sunday at Royal Ontario golf course. Well what do you know, thirty more days and we are hopefully lucky to be blessed with the same idyllic weather temperature conditions. Going twenty-one games into the season, pretty soon they will all become distant memory. Thirty-one players dared to show up and more than most contested the biggest catch of the month – the Super Series. This golf course provided members the best playable situation as far as location was concerned because of its proximity to the west and to even to those who lived extreme east of the GTA.

If you happened to be playing golf for the past two decades, it was not easy not to hear about this wily veteran who belonged in the Filipino golfing elite. Jun P. got everything going his way last Sunday after he carded a net of 65. He must had been thinking, “I’m still here guys”.

Jun P.

Jun P.

Nassau: Alright, who made the most of winning this pressure packed Sunday? Joey C. & Sennix B. did not mind sharing the front nine while Ricky R. took the solo back. You know what they say, when you’re hot you’re hot. Sennix B. and Ricky R. proudly shared the winning lowest net total of 66.

Month 4: As predicted Ricky R. captured the monthly honours while Sennix B. coming from nowhere to grab second place from Bong M. who came third.

Catch of the day……..the Super Series. Not sure what made Jun P. decide to join this contest at the last minute but he probably knew something we did not. He got his hand on this prize by blowing the field with net 65. With a tacky net of 66, Sennix B. and Ricky R. tied for second. And from the abyss, nice to see two enthusiastic seniors – Pat D. & Exe N.  shared fourth place.

Race to MIP: Guess who’s back in the saddle and fronts this race again. Jimmy M. capitalizing on a subtle performance by Jojo D. now leads Jojo by a mere 0.30 points. So far no changes with regards to the rest of runners-up. Dave N., Joey C. and Saed J. place third, fourth and fifth respectively. A reminder to these contenders – you cannot rest on your laurels for the rest of the remaining five games. By simply playing good and beating your handicap ensure your top position.

Bong M.

Bong M.

Race to Senior POY: This race also is getting interesting. Why? Nothing is conclusive until the very last game of the season. This is how it kinda shapes up.  Top five players are separated by ten strokes and less. We have a tie between Joey C. & Bong M. for the top honours. Seho O. lags in third place behind by five strokes while Ricky R. who is getting noticed with his performance of late sits seven strokes behind in fourth place. Bert C. drops down to fifth.

Race to POY: Who is going to blink first? Wish upon a star. Nothing is impossible. All these clichés come to place with still five games to go. Win the humongous fifty points in the offing and you are a lot closer to this prestigious award than you can imagine. In the meantime, this is how it played out after last Sunday’s round:

POS PLAYER BEST12
1 Manguerra, J. 306.767
2 Dizon, J. 301.667
3 Oh, S. 285.333
4 Cruz, J. 277.330
5 Munson, B. 275.700

Notice how the names of same people are mentioned in the winning podium most of the times? Simple folks – consistency. Good performance always is rewarded –that is the name of the game but nothing, nothing replaces playing for fun

Congratulations to the winners.

We all miss these two members – Paolo B. & Seb DM. Hope to see both playing soon.

ANNOUNCEMENT: A possible start of 1:30 PM at Royal Woodbine. Please come early.

Game 19

Last Sunday’s SGC golf round at Ballantrae golf course was played in ideal weather conditions. Thirty-two players plus a guest relished a well scripted dreary day; few made it looked easy, others just simply enjoying company of other golfers but the rest of us while in the thick of things they called prize frenzy frame of mind, took pleasure in a business like sentiment. Scarce number of players could handle pressure and self-esteem while totally negating any frustrations after working for five days in a week prior to Sunday’s game. Sometimes when you get caught up in glitches of life itself, a release of energy like playing golf is one liberation to oneself that is admiringly revered. Ahhhh golf. Open spaces, fresh air, nice sceneries. Most golfer wives understandably hate it but a little massaging of the brain cures a bevy of things. Sorry, before I get carried away too much although I must admit for non-golfers of course they have their own way of enjoying their own summer or they’ll have to look for something else. At least we have something to look forward to every Sunday – an agreeable difference if you know what I mean.

Pretty soon racing daylight at the end of every Sunday’s round is expected to happen before long. What a blooming pity.

Here are the winners of last Sunday’s round:

Nassau: When I saw this guy’s front nine with seven pars, I thought this might be the big winner but surprisingly, Oscar J. took only the front. Mar DV had a convincing solo take of winning the back nine. Well how about this guy who kept on plodding along with consistent low scoring – Bong M. grabbed the overall tally by turning in the lowest net score of the day of 68.

Race to Senior POY: We have a new surging leader. Bong M. with his lowest net of 68 took sole possession of the lead over Seho O. who displaced Joey C. from second place to third. Bert C. still in same spot in fourth followed by the creeping up fast Ricky R. in fifth.

POY: No changes here at all for the top five contenders. Jimmy M. still sitting precariously at the top by less than six points over Jojo D. followed by Seho O. and Bert C. third & fourth respectively. Joey C. tailing in fifth.

ANNOUNCEMENT: In behalf of the members, SGC would like to thank the Dizons (Don & Susan) for their hospitality shown last Sunday at their place after our round of golf. It was a memorable evening indeed.

Super Series next week. Good luck to all.

Game 18

After a rainy day prior to SGC’s last Sunday round, it was the opposite for round eighteen at Kingsforest golf course with the weather cooperating dreamily as the sun shone brightly but with a little cool slight breeze to treat the twenty-eight players plus two guests a taste of cosy atmosphere while playing the game we loved. Perfect. Just perfect temp conditions to play golf. It had been good so far on the Hamilton Peninsula, which had been graced with surprisingly good weather every time we came here and played. We strongly hope for the same kind of weather treatment for SGC’s Grand Finals happening here on the very same venue sometime in Octoberrrrrrrr. Brrrrrrr….get it?

Well, it was “Blind Partner” week that happens once every summer. This compulsory contest induced by SGC was one of the favourite match-ups for participating members occurring at Kingsforest. Winning top three pairs were selected randomly with the total of lowest net scores. Sheer luck was the most intriguing part to win this contest, mind you. Losers…er…I mean everybody got treated by SGC with light dinner composed of salad, fries and the ever famous Kingsforest’s  chicken wings.

“Blind Partner” winners:

  1. Don C. & Ricky R.  – 136
  2. Bert C. & Exe N.     – 141
  3. Sennix B. & Rey P. –  142

Nassau: Ricky R. is most certain what he needs to do to repeat his 1988 triumph at this year’s tournament. However the likelihood of multitude of things needed to fall perfectly into place for him to do it is not too far fetch, is it? One step at a time, baby. By shooting net of 63, nobody even bothered to pester him by winning all corners – a sweep. All in a day at the office. Good work.

Closest to the pin: Jojo D. marvellously got so close to the long fifth hole while Bong M. starting from an earlier start in second group fired the closest shot on the fourteenth.

Race to Month 4: Bong M. energetically leads by three strokes over Ricky R. With two games to go, Ricky with total lowest two net scores of 131 seems the one to beat.

Race to MIP: Jojo J. broke a tie with Jimmy M. and now leads the contest after last outing. These two are battling it out for the top prize as both face critical phase for whatever games are left. Remember the saying, “If you snooze, you lose”. Pressure. Pressure.

Race to Senior POY: Now this is very interesting. Four players are only separated by six points. The come-from-nowhere Bong M. caught up with Joey C. and now are tied atop the leaderboard. Mere two strokes behind is Seho O. Bert C. sits in fourth place six behind the leaders. What a race this is going to be.

Joey C.

Joey C.

Race to POY: Call it “Guess what – I’m contending” or “I’m in it – I could be the one” mentality. Anything is possible with this wide open race – I mean I’ve never seen this POY race so close that top 20 players are mathematically still could be vying for the most coveted award of the year. Surprisingly at this late stage of the season, nothing is insurmountable to accomplish the deed. Seven games left – rewarding yourself with imposing performances together with that 50 huge points, earning it twice or more could bag you the top trophy. Impossible? No way – so let’s go people! By the way, Jimmy M. still leads Jojo J. by the slimmest of margin of less than four points.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Next week’s Ballantrae round – please confirm your attendance early if you have not done it yet. If not, you will be forced to pay your green fee for almost double the price at the clubhouse.

The ever accommodating Dizons (Don & Susan) are opening their hearts and home again this year after our round for a heartily little dinner at their place.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 17

Was this the only grumble we heard about Tangle Creek golf course? That it was too far? It only happened once a year and considering thirty-three players were in attendance that day it was not so bad after all. Could not talk about anything else as this writer was out of town and no one fed anything at all to me except the scores. All I know was the sensational performance of one member as indicated by his score.

Posted previously about this member who was showing early signs of dramatic competitive substance by contending every time he played. The fact is, if he played regularly he could be the one to gain all of the SGC accolades. Oscar J. closed out with a net of 62 to earn himself the solo 50 points.

Oscar J.

Race to Month 4: The rise of quiet play of Bong M. got himself the lead by a mere stroke over Saed J. & Dave N.

Race to MIP: A tie that seldom happened between Jojo D. & Jimmy M. proved to be a close race. This folks is the race that is so uniquely different. Even a slight poor routine to a round would reflect nastily to the player’s status. Manny C. who just registered his twelve games was following close in third place.

Jimmy M.

Jimmy M.

Joey C.

Joey C.

Race to Senior POY: Another close race concerning only three members. Joey C. surviving the last round by leading Seho O. by two strokes while Bong M. in steady third place seven strokes behind the leader. Mathematically, there is still hope to catch the front runners for other senior members with eight games to go.

Race to POY: If you ask me, this race is anybody’s race to surmount. Why? With eight games to go and winning two huge 50 points or more could put you in seventh heaven while the front runners are in the idling mode. Jimmy M. with a touch lead over Jojo D. of less than five points sits warily at the top followed by Seho O. and Joey C. Dave N. with his resurgence of late grabbed fifth place.

ANNOUNCEMENT: If I’m not mistaken it is “Blind partner” contest at Kingsforest next week.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 16

A race against time. It is happening folks when time sometimes can make you feel losing that distant memory in a wink. Where have all the sixteen games gone? Yes they are resolutely in the past, our summer golf season is just nine games away. Chiller days are reminding us lately what is eventually expected to happen. Again another threat of rain last Sunday at Royal Woodbine’s round of golf that did not happen. Thirty players plus two guests showed up but most were prepared for the rain forecast bringing with them rain gears. Better to stay dry than wet, was what they were saying.

A start of new beginning for Month 4 contest. Manny M.

Manny M.

who was very close third in his last two starts prior to last Sunday had disheartening runner-up finishes looming over him from Nassau corner victory, but this time he fared quite well. He finished with a net of 62, capturing his first triumph for a solo top 50 points earner. He was later quoted saying “I finally won after trying in sixteen games”. Could not happen to a more deserving man.

Nassau: Ricky R. proved that perseverance could return good dividends by winning the front nine. Manny M. racked up his winning for the day grabbing the back and overall.

Game 15

Good but not a great day to play golf last Sunday at Maples of Ballantrae. Why did you ask? There was a threat of heavy rain downpour in the afternoon according to the weather network that never materialized. With the weather forecast lingering around our minds prior to the round, we finished play without a hitch except for a few bolts of unhappy angry lightning that kept on threatening the golf course when there were only two foursomes left to play. Mind you, the sky opened up and did rain continuously on our way home after a brief stay at the clubhouse for a round of drinks. With one guest and thirty-one members that showed up and played, this Sunday was the most important Sunday of the month for the members because of the prizes at stake to be had.

Ah….this was the big one that got away, to most wishful players. We heard grunts and sighs of frustrations to most competitors who had a lot of high expectations coming to this round but never got things going. Few had better rounds but only to find out to be bested by other few carrying a healthier game plan and executing well. This was golf at the cruelest form. But sign of good times are still waiting as there are ten more games to be accounted for.

Now let’s talk about the people who performed glowingly at this pressure packed Sunday. Nice to notice from seldom mentioned members who lurked in the background just playing, having fun and not thinking so much of winning until this day. Two members who just made good just found out that their swing securely stored from the archives was good enough to garner them the top prize – Saed J. & Ed P. Both players shot the lowest net of 65 with the former being the passive one and never enters any extra SGC contest; and the latter who seldom joins any contest picked the right time to do it. Both players earned 45 points each.

NASSAU: Ed P. capitalized on a good showing by seizing the front & overall. Bong M. & Seho O. were tied to snatched the back nine.

Month 3: Seho O. with a net of 68 stole the top spot from the leader  a week ago Dave N. who turned in a net of 69. Don C. coming out from nowhere placed third.

Super Series 3: The coveted top spot convincingly won by Ed P. by shooting net of 65. Losing by a lousy stroke were Bong M. & Rey P., both shooting net of 66 tied in second place. Tied for fourth with a net of 68 were Don C., Fred H., JC M., & Seho O.

Jimmy M.

Jimmy M.

Race to MIP: Jimmy M. still sits comfortably in first place followed by Jojo D. Joey C. & Julio R. stand in third place while Seho O. brings up the rear in fifth place.

Race to Senior POY: With ten more games to go, this is still anyone’s contest to conquer. Joey C’s narrow lead with Seho O. is dissipating to just four strokes from twelve strokes. Bert C. is far behind in third followed by fast charging Bong M. in fourth place. Bingoy P. still holding on to last place fifth prize.

Race to POY: Not much change with this contest after fifteen games so far. Jimmy M. sits atop followed by the idle Jojo D. Joey C., Seho O., & Bert C. parked in third, fourth, & fifth respectively.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 14

Another wet Sunday at Westview golf course with thirty-two players able to tee it up including a guest. The weather treated us fairly after all as the sun came out in the latter part of our round. This golf course according to most members was one of the hardest courses we played for the last few years. It was just too bad that Westview surprised us with an increased green fee this year as compared to previous years. One more game is in the offing for us sometime in September for this golf course.

SGC wants to jog your memory for those of you who made the Yolanda typhoon pledge for the Philippines’ calamity fund. We are getting past the halfway mark of our golf season and you have until October to fulfill your pledge.

Getting back to Sunday’s round, Dave N. topped the tournament by turning in a net of 67. He also leads the Race to Month 3 by four huge strokes with best 3 net scores of 203. With one more game left, Dave is being chased by Joey C. & Seho O., both with a total of 207. Big solo 50 points awaiting Dave for his lowest net of the day.

Nassau: Ricky R. who just won last week’s front nine got the back this time as well as the overall. Joey C. likened this golf course as one of his favourites, made sure to win the front nine.

Closest to the pin: Joey C. again firing the shot that won hole 7 at Middle course. Two in a row now for Julio R. who had a habit of shooting it close to long yardage par 3s. He achieved this on Lakeland’s hole 4.

POY: No changes here at all. Jimmy M. still holding on to that precautious lead with Jojo D. sitting closely on second place. Joey C. switching positions with Seho O. with third and fourth places respectively. Jimmy currently also leads the Race to MIP.

Senior POY: This is getting worrisome for the rest of us now as how many times Joey C’s name is being mentioned on this page. Last week Joey led Seho O. by as much as four points. Joey increased his lead with a net of 69 against Seho’s net 75 last Sunday by deserving twelve humongous points. A surprising surge by Bong M. got him the fourth place followed by Rene Q. in fifth.

Super Series is next week folks. Not too late to enter this contest. Best of luck.

Congrats to the winners.
