Round 14

Sour grapes? Not sure. The set up of tee boxes for sure riled up a lot of SGC senior members yesterday at Royal Woodbine golf course. Gold, blue & white tee boxes all bunched up together in all par 5 holes located at the most precarious spot – gold teeing area. This was not amusing at all. Distance to carry fescue or hazard played havoc to most seniors with limited physical ability who showed up and played. As a matter of fact, one senior discontinued his play because he had to face this trending scenario to a few holes ahead of him. Sad. Very sad. Most obviously rib-tickling to most seniors who just came out to enjoy the company, enjoy the outdoors and to simply have fun did not get any of that sort. Were we forgetting that the enjoyment of playing this game resting on how it was being played? The bare facts about SGC membership, whether you liked it or not, more than fifty percent were senior members. Yes at most times we all could be competitive but perceptibly that did not happen yesterday. Could we be more respective of the remaining golden years for these people? Yes SGC could be. We all learned from our mistakes.

In consequence, this tee box setup was due to the previous tournament held before us and was never returned to regular setting when it was our turn to play. SGC complained to course management after our round and was somewhat apologetic about it. If I remembered correctly, the same occurrence happened two or three years ago at this very same golf course.

We all know and played this golf course regularly throughout the years, so how do we prevent this from happening again? SGC suggested this:

Hit from familiar white or blue tee box locations. Tee up from the middle of the teeing area.

We challenge and welcome any comments from the younger generations. SGC would like to be fair and treat its precious members equally.

Moving on. There was a point in time that SGC’s best players during our golf season would decide to give it a little rest and give someone else a chance to take over. Alas, things turned out in their favour yesterday. The golf course proved to be too long – a haven for long hitters because of tee box locations that were way, way back on few holes. It would take just one of these holes to cause a disaster, scoring wise to some who were not too long off the tee. Let us give credit when it was due to those who thrived in this kind of situation. Two players – Manny C. and Jojo D. took advantage of last Sunday’s event to edge out the rest of the field by scoring a net of 68. Both deservingly grabbed the day’s prize. There were only three players who net scored in the high 60s. Dave N. lost by a slimmest of margin with a net score of 69. All three players known to be long off the tee and good. Very good indeed.

Nassau corners: Joey C. got the mojo working as he captured the front nine. Jojo D. who almost made a sweep, warranted to win the back nine and overall score convincingly. Nice work.

Par 3 closest to the pin contest: Seho O’s accuracy with his irons rewarded him of winning the seventh hole while Joey C. got another win by shooting the closest on the fifteenth.

Super series next Sunday.

Congratulations to all winners. Appreciate the round of drinks.

Round 13

Twenty-eight degrees Celsius with the sun out and slight breeze at Kingsforest golf course last Sunday. Worst humidity felt by twenty-three players plus two guests who were brave enough to show up and played. What was the word I was looking for? Sticky. It was so sticky. So uncomfortable feeling when you’re making that golf swing and felt that clothing of yours sticking to your skin – sweat & heat. Better than rain mind you. Scoring wise, it was an eventful ‘all sizzle, no steak’ scenario.

We were going to have winners regardless. So what happened at Sunday’s event? This wily veteran never surprised anyone anymore. You’d think that Sennix B. seemed forgotten and buried deep into the abyss but guessed what, he would come up from time to time and would say “Guys I’m still here”. Given a golf course to play on with all kinds of adversities around – a horde of trees all lined up left & right, OBs and water hazards on few holes, expecting low scoring would happen? No Sireeee. High average scoring proved that at Kingsforest golf course. Almost dried fairways did not help low scoring either. Sennix awakened with a net of 71 snared the day’s prize. Well done.

Nassau contest: Nobody appeared to want winning anything at all indicated by high scores, so Sennix grabbed the front nine and overall. Julio R. unwittingly took the opportunity of seizing the back nine.

Approaching to that number of fifteen games required to qualify for the coveted POY title. Make that four players registered thirteen rounds after last Sunday – Rey P., Jojo D., Ricky R. & Mike M. all in that list in winning order. Piece of advice? Try not to miss anymore games and try your best to keep up with these leaders.

Thirteen. This is the magic number to win the SPOY title. Why of course, SGC just played its thirteenth game of the season. So far, only two senior entrants were able to register thirteen games – Rey P. and Ricky R. with the former running away with a humongous lead. No need to worry for the rest of the contestants as we still have twelve more games unaccounted for.

Month 3 contest with two more games to go, has its own three top players in the lead – Seho O., Jojo D., & JC M. No significant qualms here as it is still anybody’s game for a lot of players are all bunched up closely.

For those who are aspiring to see improvements in your game, lowering of handicap that is, MIP will be tabulated after the fifteenth game. To qualify please check SGC’s local rules.

See you at RW next Sunday. Go ahead, make your day. Good luck.

Congratulations to the winners. Thanks for the round of drinks.

Round 12

Here we were again at almost halfway point of our golf season. Time always flew fast when we were having fun. Twenty-nine degrees Celsius last Sunday at Westview golf course welcoming twenty-three players as well as three guests.

Hmm……let me see the profile on last Sunday’s winner – JC M. In 2015 POY race he closely fought for the title but fell short dropping down in fourth place, lagged behind by twenty-four strokes to the eventual winner, his very own brother, Mike M. He narrowly missed third place overall by a mere stroke to Jimmy M. Not bad – engaging yourself in top five of the POY race was not an easy task. His best outing last year was a net of 67 for second place at Royal Woodbine on August 16, 2015, round 17, beaten by a net of 64 courtesy of Bingoy P. Well at Westview golf course which had a higher course rating than most of the golf courses slated in SGC schedule, amusingly had its own way of counterbalancing player’s respective handicaps. In simple layman’s terms, it was a difficult course. JC came out just mighty fine by bagging the day’s prize with a net score of 70. It could be a start of a good beginning for him; couldn’t agree more.

Nassau Contest: This some guy with an Irish ……er Pinoy luck, Bert C. won the front nine. Shared and shared alike, this sounded good as three people all tied to win the back nine – Jojo D., JC M., & Seho O. Who else would win the overall score but JC M.

Sad news for an ailing member. Sam Kim with unfortunate advice from his doctor not to play any physically driven sport activity because of back problems is abruptly gone for the season. May we remind everyone that Sam was one of our members that was instrumental in helping SGC win this year’s Gemini Cup by shooting an admirably net of 62. SGC in behalf of its members would like to wish him a speedy recovery. We appreciate as well the round of drinks he provided last Sunday. See you next year Sammy.

Round 11

It was twenty-seven degrees Celsius at Tyandaga golf course where twenty-three players tried their mettle of recording low golf scores with this sympathetic, stunning ideal weather. What more could you ask for? After an endearing win as Gemini Cup champions last week at GTAA Interleague event, celebration after the game nutritiously happened at Bingoy P’s sacrificiail home. Food and drinks provided by few members and of course by SGC as well, were devoured scrumptiously by those who came. Thanks and appreciation coming from those who were grateful enough to savour the festivity. Nice to know if we could do it again next year? A 64-million-dollar question.

Last Sunday was already in the record books as the eleventh game of our SGC young golf season and the hands of time were moving fast. From our point of view, this person who only played his third game of the season, was seemingly trending to be a fully retiree from work and or should we say ……..playing golf. Ross B. surprisingly with a chance to reinvent himself in an adventurous way got his retired skilful golf mojo generated once more by winning the lowest net of the day. He carded a net score of 68.

Ross B.

Ross B.

If I may, please let me refer to something about retirement coming from a retired professional golfer:

“When a man retires, his wife gets twice the husband but only half the income.” Chi Chi Rodriguez

Nassau corner winners: Three players joining in to grab the front nine – Ross B., Bert C. & Bingoy P. A similar scenario captured the back nine again by three players – Ross B. Joey C. & Julio R. And if you noticed Ross B. was a winner in both nine corners – and for that reason, Ross who else, took the overall prize.
