Game 19

Last Sunday’s SGC golf round at Ballantrae golf course was played in ideal weather conditions. Thirty-two players plus a guest relished a well scripted dreary day; few made it looked easy, others just simply enjoying company of other golfers but the rest of us while in the thick of things they called prize frenzy frame of mind, took pleasure in a business like sentiment. Scarce number of players could handle pressure and self-esteem while totally negating any frustrations after working for five days in a week prior to Sunday’s game. Sometimes when you get caught up in glitches of life itself, a release of energy like playing golf is one liberation to oneself that is admiringly revered. Ahhhh golf. Open spaces, fresh air, nice sceneries. Most golfer wives understandably hate it but a little massaging of the brain cures a bevy of things. Sorry, before I get carried away too much although I must admit for non-golfers of course they have their own way of enjoying their own summer or they’ll have to look for something else. At least we have something to look forward to every Sunday – an agreeable difference if you know what I mean.

Pretty soon racing daylight at the end of every Sunday’s round is expected to happen before long. What a blooming pity.

Here are the winners of last Sunday’s round:

Nassau: When I saw this guy’s front nine with seven pars, I thought this might be the big winner but surprisingly, Oscar J. took only the front. Mar DV had a convincing solo take of winning the back nine. Well how about this guy who kept on plodding along with consistent low scoring – Bong M. grabbed the overall tally by turning in the lowest net score of the day of 68.

Closest to the pin: Jimmy M. with a resounding shot on the sixth hole that beat all other; one fella after another got it close but to no avail until Saed J. shot the closest on the fifteenth.

Race to MIP: Jojo D. still leads Jimmy M. by the same margin of 0.90 points as last week followed by the idle Dave N. & Joey C. third and fourth respectively. Saed J. who just completed his twelfth game, took fifth spot from Seho O. who drops down to sixth.

Race to Senior POY: We have a new surging leader. Bong M. with his lowest net of 68 took sole possession of the lead over Seho O. who displaced Joey C. from second place to third. Bert C. still in same spot in fourth followed by the creeping up fast Ricky R. in fifth.

POY: No changes here at all for the top five contenders. Jimmy M. still sitting precariously at the top by less than six points over Jojo D. followed by Seho O. and Bert C. third & fourth respectively. Joey C. tailing in fifth.

ANNOUNCEMENT: In behalf of the members, SGC would like to thank the Dizons (Don & Susan) for their hospitality shown last Sunday at their place after our round of golf. It was a memorable evening indeed.

Super Series next week. Good luck to all.

Game 18

After a rainy day prior to SGC’s last Sunday round, it was the opposite for round eighteen at Kingsforest golf course with the weather cooperating dreamily as the sun shone brightly but with a little cool slight breeze to treat the twenty-eight players plus two guests a taste of cosy atmosphere while playing the game we loved. Perfect. Just perfect temp conditions to play golf. It had been good so far on the Hamilton Peninsula, which had been graced with surprisingly good weather every time we came here and played. We strongly hope for the same kind of weather treatment for SGC’s Grand Finals happening here on the very same venue sometime in Octoberrrrrrrr. Brrrrrrr….get it?

Well, it was “Blind Partner” week that happens once every summer. This compulsory contest induced by SGC was one of the favourite match-ups for participating members occurring at Kingsforest. Winning top three pairs were selected randomly with the total of lowest net scores. Sheer luck was the most intriguing part to win this contest, mind you. Losers…er…I mean everybody got treated by SGC with light dinner composed of salad, fries and the ever famous Kingsforest’s  chicken wings.

“Blind Partner” winners:

  1. Don C. & Ricky R.  – 136
  2. Bert C. & Exe N.     – 141
  3. Sennix B. & Rey P. –  142

Nassau: Ricky R. is most certain what he needs to do to repeat his 1988 triumph at this year’s tournament. However the likelihood of multitude of things needed to fall perfectly into place for him to do it is not too far fetch, is it? One step at a time, baby. By shooting net of 63, nobody even bothered to pester him by winning all corners – a sweep. All in a day at the office. Good work.

Closest to the pin: Jojo D. marvellously got so close to the long fifth hole while Bong M. starting from an earlier start in second group fired the closest shot on the fourteenth.

Race to Month 4: Bong M. energetically leads by three strokes over Ricky R. With two games to go, Ricky with total lowest two net scores of 131 seems the one to beat.

Race to MIP: Jojo J. broke a tie with Jimmy M. and now leads the contest after last outing. These two are battling it out for the top prize as both face critical phase for whatever games are left. Remember the saying, “If you snooze, you lose”. Pressure. Pressure.

Race to Senior POY: Now this is very interesting. Four players are only separated by six points. The come-from-nowhere Bong M. caught up with Joey C. and now are tied atop the leaderboard. Mere two strokes behind is Seho O. Bert C. sits in fourth place six behind the leaders. What a race this is going to be.

Race to POY: Call it “Guess what – I’m contending” or “I’m in it – I could be the one” mentality. Anything is possible with this wide open race – I mean I’ve never seen this POY race so close that top 20 players are mathematically still could be vying for the most coveted award of the year. Surprisingly at this late stage of the season, nothing is insurmountable to accomplish the deed. Seven games left – rewarding yourself with imposing performances together with that 50 huge points, earning it twice or more could bag you the top trophy. Impossible? No way – so let’s go people! By the way, Jimmy M. still leads Jojo J. by the slimmest of margin of less than four points.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Next week’s Ballantrae round – please confirm your attendance early if you have not done it yet. If not, you will be forced to pay your green fee for almost double the price at the clubhouse.

The ever accommodating Dizons (Don & Susan) are opening their hearts and home again this year after our round for a heartily little dinner at their place.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 17

Was this the only grumble we heard about Tangle Creek golf course? That it was too far? It only happened once a year and considering thirty-three players were in attendance that day it was not so bad after all. Could not talk about anything else as this writer was out of town and no one fed anything at all to me except the scores. All I know was the sensational performance of one member as indicated by his score.

Posted previously about this member who was showing early signs of dramatic competitive substance by contending every time he played. The fact is, if he played regularly he could be the one to gain all of the SGC accolades. Oscar J. closed out with a net of 62 to earn himself the solo 50 points.

Nassau: Oscar J. was nice enough to share the front nine with Ross B. and Jojo D. but Oscar overwhelmingly took sole position of winning the back & overall.

Race to Month 4: The rise of quiet play of Bong M. got himself the lead by a mere stroke over Saed J. & Dave N.

Race to MIP: A tie that seldom happened between Jojo D. & Jimmy M. proved to be a close race. This folks is the race that is so uniquely different. Even a slight poor routine to a round would reflect nastily to the player’s status. Manny C. who just registered his twelve games was following close in third place.

Jimmy M.

Joey C.

Joey C.

Race to Senior POY: Another close race concerning only three members. Joey C. surviving the last round by leading Seho O. by two strokes while Bong M. in steady third place seven strokes behind the leader. Mathematically, there is still hope to catch the front runners for other senior members with eight games to go.

Race to POY: If you ask me, this race is anybody’s race to surmount. Why? With eight games to go and winning two huge 50 points or more could put you in seventh heaven while the front runners are in the idling mode. Jimmy M. with a touch lead over Jojo D. of less than five points sits warily at the top followed by Seho O. and Joey C. Dave N. with his resurgence of late grabbed fifth place.

ANNOUNCEMENT: If I’m not mistaken it is “Blind partner” contest at Kingsforest next week.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 16

A race against time. It is happening folks when time sometimes can make you feel losing that distant memory in a wink. Where have all the sixteen games gone? Yes they are resolutely in the past, our summer golf season is just nine games away. Chiller days are reminding us lately what is eventually expected to happen. Again another threat of rain last Sunday at Royal Woodbine’s round of golf that did not happen. Thirty players plus two guests showed up but most were prepared for the rain forecast bringing with them rain gears. Better to stay dry than wet, was what they were saying.

A start of new beginning for Month 4 contest. Manny M.

Manny M.
Manny M.

who was very close third in his last two starts prior to last Sunday had disheartening runner-up finishes looming over him from Nassau corner victory, but this time he fared quite well. He finished with a net of 62, capturing his first triumph for a solo top 50 points earner. He was later quoted saying “I finally won after trying in sixteen games”. Could not happen to a more deserving man.

Nassau: Ricky R. proved that perseverance could return good dividends by winning the front nine. Manny M. racked up his winning for the day grabbing the back and overall.

Closest to the pin: The emergence of Bong M. of late fired a shot close enough to steal the fourth hole par three while a tie was declared for both Pat D. & Saed J. as winners of the tenth hole.
