Game 15

Good but not a great day to play golf last Sunday at Maples of Ballantrae. Why did you ask? There was a threat of heavy rain downpour in the afternoon according to the weather network that never materialized. With the weather forecast lingering around our minds prior to the round, we finished play without a hitch except for a few bolts of unhappy angry lightning that kept on threatening the golf course when there were only two foursomes left to play. Mind you, the sky opened up and did rain continuously on our way home after a brief stay at the clubhouse for a round of drinks. With one guest and thirty-one members that showed up and played, this Sunday was the most important Sunday of the month for the members because of the prizes at stake to be had.

Ah….this was the big one that got away, to most wishful players. We heard grunts and sighs of frustrations to most competitors who had a lot of high expectations coming to this round but never got things going. Few had better rounds but only to find out to be bested by other few carrying a healthier game plan and executing well. This was golf at the cruelest form. But sign of good times are still waiting as there are ten more games to be accounted for.

Now let’s talk about the people who performed glowingly at this pressure packed Sunday. Nice to notice from seldom mentioned members who lurked in the background just playing, having fun and not thinking so much of winning until this day. Two members who just made good just found out that their swing securely stored from the archives was good enough to garner them the top prize – Saed J. & Ed P. Both players shot the lowest net of 65 with the former being the passive one and never enters any extra SGC contest; and the latter who seldom joins any contest picked the right time to do it. Both players earned 45 points each.

NASSAU: Ed P. capitalized on a good showing by seizing the front & overall. Bong M. & Seho O. were tied to snatched the back nine.

Closest to the pin: Joey C. without sign of slowing down took hole ten while Dave N. took care of the more difficult hole 14th.

Bong M.

Month 3: Seho O. with a net of 68 stole the top spot from the leader  a week ago Dave N. who turned in a net of 69. Don C. coming out from nowhere placed third.

Super Series 3: The coveted top spot convincingly won by Ed P. by shooting net of 65. Losing by a lousy stroke were Bong M. & Rey P., both shooting net of 66 tied in second place. Tied for fourth with a net of 68 were Don C., Fred H., JC M., & Seho O.

Jimmy M.

Race to MIP: Jimmy M. still sits comfortably in first place followed by Jojo D. Joey C. & Julio R. stand in third place while Seho O. brings up the rear in fifth place.

Race to Senior POY: With ten more games to go, this is still anyone’s contest to conquer. Joey C’s narrow lead with Seho O. is dissipating to just four strokes from twelve strokes. Bert C. is far behind in third followed by fast charging Bong M. in fourth place. Bingoy P. still holding on to last place fifth prize.

Race to POY: Not much change with this contest after fifteen games so far. Jimmy M. sits atop followed by the idle Jojo D. Joey C., Seho O., & Bert C. parked in third, fourth, & fifth respectively.

Congratulations to all winners.

Game 14

Another wet Sunday at Westview golf course with thirty-two players able to tee it up including a guest. The weather treated us fairly after all as the sun came out in the latter part of our round. This golf course according to most members was one of the hardest courses we played for the last few years. It was just too bad that Westview surprised us with an increased green fee this year as compared to previous years. One more game is in the offing for us sometime in September for this golf course.

SGC wants to jog your memory for those of you who made the Yolanda typhoon pledge for the Philippines’ calamity fund. We are getting past the halfway mark of our golf season and you have until October to fulfill your pledge.

Getting back to Sunday’s round, Dave N. topped the tournament by turning in a net of 67. He also leads the Race to Month 3 by four huge strokes with best 3 net scores of 203. With one more game left, Dave is being chased by Joey C. & Seho O., both with a total of 207. Big solo 50 points awaiting Dave for his lowest net of the day.

Nassau: Ricky R. who just won last week’s front nine got the back this time as well as the overall. Joey C. likened this golf course as one of his favourites, made sure to win the front nine.

Closest to the pin: Joey C. again firing the shot that won hole 7 at Middle course. Two in a row now for Julio R. who had a habit of shooting it close to long yardage par 3s. He achieved this on Lakeland’s hole 4.

POY: No changes here at all. Jimmy M. still holding on to that precautious lead with Jojo D. sitting closely on second place. Joey C. switching positions with Seho O. with third and fourth places respectively. Jimmy currently also leads the Race to MIP.

Senior POY: This is getting worrisome for the rest of us now as how many times Joey C’s name is being mentioned on this page. Last week Joey led Seho O. by as much as four points. Joey increased his lead with a net of 69 against Seho’s net 75 last Sunday by deserving twelve humongous points. A surprising surge by Bong M. got him the fourth place followed by Rene Q. in fifth.

Super Series is next week folks. Not too late to enter this contest. Best of luck.

Congrats to the winners.

Game 13

SGC is now officially at the halfway mark of the summer golf season. A good number of players showed up and played Kingsforest golf course last Sunday. As a matter of fact twenty-five members were able to tee it up. Some members were committed to other two golf events that were simultaneously happening and surely with the intention of supporting worthy charitable causes. The sky opened up and then came the rain downpour for brief minutes at the early round. After that the sun came out and turned to sticky hot afternoon altogether. The golf course was still not really in tip top shape most especially the fairways which are missing a lot of patches of no grass since we played here a month ago. You were just out of luck if your ball happened to stay in one of those.

Anyway, regardless of the not so ideal venue situation, the best story line here was a performance of one new member who fired a gross score of three over par 75. This piece by far was an exultation of Brian Kim’s credential as a superb golf player.

Nassau: First time winners catapulted in winning the corners unexpectedly. Ricky R. skillfully took the front nine while Bert C. grabbed the back and overall.

Closest to the pin: If you think a senior member could not hit it close to a 192 yards par 3 hole, you were wrong. Fred DLR fired with gusto to win the 5th hole. As far as the back nine 17th hole was concerned, nobody could get on the green until the 4th flight of players took their turns. Julio R. was in this group and had no problems hitting it close that no one from the groups that followed could beat.

Race to Month 3: With only two rounds to go, Dave N. took the liberty of pushing himself ahead by shooting a net of 70 giving him a lead of a mere stroke from Seho O. and Bert C. Two others players four strokes behind are Joey C. and JC M.

Dave N.

Dave N.

Race to POY: Same faces sit atop the power lead halfway down – Jimmy M. Jojo D., Seho O. & Joey C. Anybody’s game to win it all.

Race to Senior POY: It looks like this is a race for two people right out for Joey C. & Seho O. Both possess a huge margin from those running from third place and down. Unless someone shoots the light out of the remaining games, this could be the game for either of the players mentioned above.

Congratulations to the winners.

Game 12

SGC tourney travelled east last Sunday to play the very same venue where Super Series 3 is to be held in three weeks at Maples of Ballantrae golf course. Thirty players showed up including two guests. Players with intentions of grabbing SS3 prize got a good look at this course hoping for an effective plan to masterfully contend and win a prize for the coming event. For those who just wanted to get solace from a hard everyday grind at work or at home, this was the ideal occasion to relax and unwind. No complaints about the perfect golf weather, no excuses not to enjoy the weekend outing. It is one of the reasons that golf has come to mean so much to myself and many others.

So we had the round of golf and winners we should have. Three members got their mojo going by outduelling the field with a net of 66 – the ever relentless new member Don C., our promising & young buck Sam K., and the sweet & smooth swinging Dave N. All looked good to earn themselves huge 41.667 points each.

Nassau: Never giving up Joey C. stole the front nine with ease. Don C. with his impressive low net of 66 grabbed overall and tied the wily veteran Mar DV. for the back as well.

Closest to the pin: Bert C. won the tenth and the newly dubbed “Mr. Closest to the Pin” guy Bingoy P. hit a clutch shot on the harder of the two holes fourteenth hole.

Race to Month 3 is posted and if you’re interested, MIP results is also available. This maybe the info you need if you think your game is sliding down a bit or not. No, I did not mean the big “S” word.

Senior POY: These two seniors are playing the musical chairs game. Just a week ago it was Seho O. who had the lead by one stroke over Joey C. But Joey’s net of 67 against 68 of Seho got Joey the lead back. Interesting and a good race although we have a long, long way to go.

POY: It looks like Jimmy M. got a foothold of this contest. He leads for a number of weeks now with Jojo D. running close. Also in contention are the seniors mentioned above – Seho & Joey. With a solo win next week by anyone of the contenders it could change the scenario. Good luck to everyone.

We thank Pat D. for the nourishing fries after the game and also a round of drinks provided by Nassau winner Don C.

Congrats to all winners!
