Round 18 August 25, 2013

Westview golf course last Sunday proved to be not so ideal for most of the twenty-five players plus one guest that showed up and played. It was the pre-announced aeration of the greens that drew the most player’s ire. Greens did not cure that much on our tee time as putts and chips were hopping all over the place. On the positive note, on the day of sunshine with no breeze at all weather was very nice. Golf course management figured that giving SGC $10 markdown on green fee as well as free buckets of range balls would ease the anguish a bit. It seemed that few players were not affected by the green conditions as low scores were posted. “Everyone was playing the same course and players who were the least affected by the conditions would post better scores” one of the players said. No arguments here about that. Adjustments, adjustments and more adjustments to consider and succeed.

Julio R.

ROUND: After starting slow in the early part of the season, Julio R. finally showing his true grit by grinding a splendid 80 gross score. Saed J. and PJ P. both delivered a brisk net score of 68.

NASSAU: Julio R’s final point concluded by winning the front nine and overall. Joey C’s net of 70 netted him the back nine.

RACE TO MONTH 4: Dave N. who is steadfastly leaving anyone else behind is projected to win Month 4. With only a game left, Dave is a runaway leader by huge five points. Grudgingly, two players saying ‘not so fast there Davey boy’ are still there and will not concede easily are Jun P. and PJ P. Both have total net of 211.

POY: This race is going to be an interesting one. Five people are tightly bunched together at the top of the leaderboard. Manny C. who remained idle last Sunday still leads by two points. Ed I. grabbed the sole position of second place from Jimmy M. who was idle as well dropped down to third place trailing Ed by two points. Tied for distant fourth twelve points behind third place are Levi M. and Seho O. Racing up furiously to catch up with the leaders is PJ P. who had a good run the last few weeks. If you believe, nothing is unreachable. Right PJ?

SENIOR POY: Not much to report here. If you ask me this is anybody’s contest to win so far. Contending players are having ‘night and day’ performances that no one could hang on the lead for a long period of time. One interesting note is one player who could be leading it by a mile is Bingoy P. If he completes his tenth game on a good note, he’ll win this one for sure. Bingoy leads everyone with his total net scores from game five up to his fully played eight game.

MIP: Kiss this one goodbye but for one Manny C. He has increased his improved league leading edge by a good margin even remaining futile last week. You only need twelve games to qualify and you are all set to win this contest even if you rest in your couch for the rest of the season. Ed I. stole second place from Paolo B. who dropped down way down to fifth place. Levi M. and Julio R. both tied for third place.

Congratulations to the winners!

Round 17 August 18, 2013

So many storylines happened last Sunday at Kingsforest golf course. To make the day more interesting was the mandatory “blind partner” contest. It went on without any glitch as every player competing tried to post low score to match his/her low score with another player. Thirty players showed up plus two guests and enjoyed the beautiful weather offered by the Hamilton Peninsula. All members and guests relished dinner after the round courtesy of SGC. We have revered this golf course for a long time now and we appreciated the friendly starter services of Dave as we said our ‘til next year adieux.

ROUND: Would the result be more of the same this time around as far as who would score the lowest was concerned? NO sir. We have a new face unnoticeably making noise getting up there posting good scores. The way Dave N. hit the ball for the past week two weeks, finally got it together Sunday to carry him to a net 66. Manny C. who’s been a regular near or at the top of the leaderboard got the last laugh with best gross of 76. Amazingly enough six players – including Manny C., Pat D., Don D., Bert C., Jimmy M., & Jun P. primed with clutch shots and good determination all posted net of 69. Added: I did not realize that Jimmy M. grinded a gross score of 75 better than anybody else. Sorry Jimmy. How about this pic hah?

Jimmy M.

BLIND PARTNER: This once a year competition proved to be surprisingly anyone’s contest as nobody knew what the result was going to be. Three prizes were up for grabs. Deservedly, two partnerships tied and garnered the first place award. Partners of the two Mannys won the first prize together with Don D. and PJ P. Third place went to Mike M. & Bert C.

NASSAU: With a solid showing Dave N. took overall score winning also the back nine tied with Don D. Nice to see a fresh face taking the front nine, Ed P. with a net of 32.

POY: No ties for top twelve net scores so far after round seventeen. Manny C. leads Jimmy M. by a mere four points. Holding on to third place is Ed I. with Seho O. following closely in fourth. An upcoming Paolo B. grabbed final fifth place from Levi M. who dropped down to sixth place.

SENIOR POY: Seho O. still hanging on to the lead by as much as ten points to second placer Bert C. Mar DV. and Exe N. skidded down to third and fourth respectively. Looks like Jun P. has something to prove to move up with the leaders with strong performances for the past three weeks. At the rate that he is going, Jun P. is projected to take the lead next week.

MIP: What can we say about this fellow who looks like the only one improving by as much compared to other contenders? Manny C. who has made a habit of shooting consistently is good money bet to win this award for sure. Paolo B. who just completed his twelfth round of the year finally qualified for second place dislodging Julio R. to fourth place tied with Levi M. Ed I. who seemed to be in contention in any contest is in third place.

Fruitful day for a few but not for most. Well, there’s always next time.

Congratulations to the winners!

According to Jimmy M., we play Middle/Lakeland course combo at 1:30 PM. Due to the green being aerated currently in which they mentioned to be partially cured by the time we teed off, in the offing is a discount of $10 all around: $55 walking/$65 with cart. Not clear is free bucket of range balls. We shall see.

Round 16 August 11, 2013

Good to know when SGC members felt that an incentive was to follow after last Sunday’s exhausting round at Royal Ontario with refreshing and delicious meal. Thanks to the Deocas’ hospitality, players enjoyed the happy hours dining, drinking, bonding and playfully playing cards with few ducats at stake at Pat’s place. Although the invitation was extended to every member few players did not make it due to prior personal commitments. Also in display were the two “green jackets” donated by Pat D. awaiting the winners of regular POY and the Senior POY.

SGC is also proud to introduce its new members this year – Sam Kim, Brian Bontigao, Rene Querubin, and Dave Nelson who at one time was a member years ago. We welcome all new friends wholeheartedly to our summer past time.

ROUND: This blog did warn you boys earlier about SGC’s only rose among thorns racking up wins by posting low scores almost every time she showed up and played. Yes indeed, Lina M. definitely opened a lot of our eyes by carding another low net score of 65 after shooting 66 last week. Another veteran, Jun P. showed he’s still an authority to reckon with by posting net of sizzling 67. Admired that spectacular third shot by Jun P. on the ninth par 5 hole from the left rough to the left of the cart path with 130 yards to go swinging indiscriminately with his stance closed to the bushes. Stuck it less than three yards to the pin and made the bird. Oscar J. who seldom leaves his love nest in Niagara to play with us, had a good round with net of 67 as well.

NASSAU: Oscar J. rewarded by a good showing, clearly won overall with Dave N. taking the front nine and Bert C. took the back.

POY: One of these top five scenarios are in place after the sixteenth round it seemed. The focus again returned to the top two players. Manny C. and Jimmy M. are now tied for the lead with total twelve net scores of 879. Another switcheroo happened for third place as Ed I. grabbed third from Seho O. One member, Levi M. who came from nowhere stole the spotlight by climbing to fifth spot. Jojo D. who was holding the fifth position for quite a long period of time stumbled to desolation. Time to get up and show who the boss is, right Jo?

SENIOR POY: Good news for Seho O. who led this maiden contest by a hair of one point last week, increased his lead this time by six huge consoling points. Lagging behind in second place is Mar DV. tied with Exe N.

MIP: Race to Most Improved Player posted on our web a week ago requested by a member. Not much to say on this one except Manny M. seemed like the only one getting the improvement and going away with it. We’d like to see some of the young ones give him a run for his money.

Hopefully wishing that these players – Seb DM, Bong M. and Rey P. would join us play a round of golf sooner or later.

Congratulations to all winners!

Round 15 August 4, 2013

Announcement for this Sunday’s dinner at Pat’s place after Royal Ontario’s round: Members are encouraged to show up and oblige to Pat’s invitation to a get together and dine as he promises an abundance of food and drinks. We are certain that even if you are not playing this Sunday, Pat is more than willing to accommodate all of us.

Directions here

Another perfect weather for the twenty-eight players playing golf at Kingsforest last Super Series Sunday. A funny thing happened in the parking lot on our way to the clubhouse. We thought that someone was selling golf stuff at the back of his car as members got the attention and milled around with curiosity. Well, it was Seho O. with a sack of fresh harvested corn in his car trunk offering members to take home whatever they could take. Nice one Seho and thank you.

We heard that a few members drove down to Ohio to watch Tiger Woods win the WGC tournament at Firestone.

Bingoy P.

Bingoy P.

ROUND: Someone in lemon yellow outfit attired from head to foot, shock the whole golf course, staff, players and even the cart yielding drink vendors were gazing with amazement at him. Everybody thought Ricky Fowler was in town but without the flat bill hat. The outfit must have worked because it drove the demons out of the golf course as Bingoy P. bagged the most prized big boy monthly contest, the Super Series.

Manny M.

Manny M.

The lowest gross round went to a coming from a vacation down south in Virginia, Manny C. We were all in awe at the clubhouse upon learning that Manny shot a remarkable one under par 71. Holidaying together with Jojo D., secrets came out that they were playing golf every day. I could be playing every day and still shoot twenty or more over par.

Special mention to Lina M. shooting net round of 66 trailed closely by ‘which Mike M. is gonna show up’ with 68, and the everybody loves Raymond errrrr…. I mean Manny M. with a 69.

SUPER SERIES: As mentioned above, Bingoy P. shot net score of 68 to take the coveted spot. Mar DV took second place with 71 followed by Dave N. with 72 in third place. Our newest member, Sam K. capped with net score of 73 stole fourth place.

NASSAU: Same yellow outfit won the back and overall. Exe N. who occasionally enters a contest, picked the right time this time by grabbing the front.

POY: Manny C. thanks to his net 64 catapulted him from fourth position to number one with total twelve net scores of 877 relegating Jimmy M. from atop the leaderboard to second place with 887. Meanwhile Seho O. with 890 and Ed I. who was idle this week with the same total points as last week of 896, switched places as third and fourth respectively. Jojo D. stayed in fifth place. No other faces are threatening to catch up as the tourney is winding down.

Seho O.

Seho O.

SENIOR POY: Ahhhh….reaching out for the stars. One member right now is possible of achieving the feat of winning POY and the Senior POY. Seho O. still leads this contest and still aspiring to win the regular POY as well. But the battle for this Cinderella contest is shaping up tightly with only three players separated by merely three points. Seho controls the lead with total eight net scores of 601 followed by Mar DV with 602 and the ever smooth swinging Exe N. with 604.

Again we appreciate Don D. for the distressing task of collecting “funds” week in and week out. Thanks to the winners for round of drinks and fries.

Congratulations to the winners!
